Princess Leonor, who will turn 17 on October 31, 2022, will take over the honorary chairmanship of the foundation once she turns 18. For now, her father, King Felipe VI, holds the position on her behalf.

Princess of Girona is one of her official titles in addition to Princess of Asturias. It's the former title of the heir/heiress of the Kingdom of Aragon in the 14th century.

Aragon was merged into the Kingdom of Castile in 1479 to form the Kingdom of Spain. However, Spain did not earn its status as a single kingdom until the reign of King Charles I in 1516.

Princess of Girona Foundation was set up in 2009 by the civil society entities in Girona to become a benchmark in supporting young people in their professional and personal development.

Each year, the foundation grants award through the FPdGi Awards to individuals who excel in their own fields and who can act as role models for the youth.

In her capacity as Princess of Girona, Princess Leonor handed out the trophies to the 2022 awardees in the fields of Arts and Literature, Business, Social, Scientific Research, and International.

The king has slowly given his eldest daughter some loads of royal duties to prepare herself for the role of a Queen regnant. Princess Leonor will be the first Spanish Queen regnant since Queen Isabella II in the 19th century.

However. she is only heir-presumptive, which means that if her parents will have a son, she will be displaced in the line of succession. Spain has not yet changed its succession law. It still follows the male-preference primogeniture law.

Although there was a talk in the Spanish parliament of altering it to Absolute succession in 2006, the plan was halted when then-Princess Letizia gave birth to Infanta Sofia in April 2007. The birth of another girl means that Princess Leonor's position in the line of succession remains the same.

The 16-year-old heir-presumptive of King Felipe VI also gave a speech during the awarding ceremony, she said:

“Our five winners represent this objective that the Foundation defends: a model of coexistence in which training, commitment to others, and social responsibility make it easier for young people to fully demonstrate their potential, with a real impact on society. And, for the first time, the awards go to five women. My sister Sofia and I have seen your projects and we are impressed. Also grateful!”

The second-in-line to the throne also did not wear a pair of heels like her mom and sister, instead, she kept herself simple in a pair of Carolina Herrera slingback flat shoes in nude. And let her hair fall loose at her back.
