Prince Philip spent Christmas at the hospital

HRH Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh spent his Christmas for the first time away from his wife

His Royal Highness, Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, was rushed to Papsworth Hospital in Cambridgeshire last December 23 after he complained of chest pain while walking around Sandringham, the Queen's 25,000 acre private estate in Norfolk, England. The Duke of Edinburgh never missed Christmas celebration with the royal family at Sandringham, but this year, he spent his first Christmas without the Queen.

But according to the Telegraph news, the 90-year-old Prince consort is "itching to get out" from the hospital so that he could enjoy the rest of the Christmas season with his wife, children and grandchildren at Sandringham, but doctors decided to exercise extreme caution by allowing him to stay in the hospital for few more days to ensure the heart operation performed on him is successful.

The Duke is still spritely active despite his age, his health is generally good. Royal biographer, Penny Junor according to BBC news said: "Prince Philip is an extraordinary fit man, he takes a lot of exercise and does an awful lot of work".

His grandchildren: Prince William, Prince Harry, Peter and Zara Phillips, Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie, visited him in the hospital on Christmas day.

The British royal family members traditionally spent Christmas together in Sandringham with Prince Philip leading the entourage to the church service at St. Mary Magdalene on Christmas day. This Christmas marked the appearance for the first time at Sandringham by two commoners who joined the royal family this year: Kate Middleton and Mike Tindall, husband of Zara Phillips.
