Prince Philippos of Greece and Denmark's Church Wedding Ceremony


Prince Philippos, the youngest child of Constantine II, the former Greek monarch, and Queen Anne-Marie, and VistaJet heiress, Nina Flohr, will have their religious wedding ceremony today in Greece, October 23, 2021. 

The two already got married in a civil ceremony in St. Moritz, Switzerland on December 12, 2020 but due to coronavirus restrictions, only their fathers attended the ceremony.

Nina was not officially created Princess Nina following the civil wedding. They needed to have a Greek Orthodox church wedding before she will be given the title of a princess.

Prince Philippos, who was named after the Duke of Edinburgh, is a relative of most European royals through his parents. Constantine II, the former King of Greece and Queen Anne-Marie.

The reigning Danish monarch, Queen Margrethe II is his maternal aunt, as the older sister of his mother. While Queen Sofia of Spain is his paternal aunt, as the older sister of his father.

As a direct descendant of Queen Victoria of Britain through her granddaughter, Princess Sophia of Prussia, Prince Philippos is in line of succession to the British throne.

He is a godson of Diana, Princess of Wales, Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh and King Juan Carlos of Spain. And a third cousin of Prince William and Prince Harry through King George I of Greece.

Prince Philippos obtained a Foreign Relations degree from Georgetown University in the United States. He is now based in New York City where he worked as a financial analyst.

His parents moved back to Greece in 2013 after more than 30 years of living in England. His father was deposed in 1967 through a military coup, the Greek government abolished the monarchy in 1973, however, the family retained their royal titles.

About Nina Flohr

Nina is the only child of Thomas Flohr, the founder and Chairman of VistaJet, the first global private aviation company, and Katharina Konecny, former editor-in-chief of Vogue Russia. Her parents are now divorced. Nina also sat previously as VistaJet's brand director.

Nina is the founder and creative director of Kisawa Sanctuary, a luxury hotel in Mozambique, and the Bazaruto Center for Scientific Studies, an environmental conservation center also in Mozambique. 

Nina accompanied Prince Philippos to the wedding of Princess Eugenie of York and Jack Brooksbank in October 2018. 

The couple will have a church wedding at Metropolitan Cathedral of Athens today, October 23. It is not known however who among royals of Europe will make it to the ceremony as Greece has still coronavirus restrictions imposed. 

The only confirmed relative to attend is the groom's paternal aunt. Queen Sofia of Spain.

The wedding of Prince Philippos of Greece and Denmark and Nina Flohr is the first royal wedding held at Metropolitan Cathedral of Athens since the wedding of his parents in 1964.

It was also the first royal event in the cathedral since the christening of Philippos' older brother, Crown Prince Pavlos, in 1967.

The wedding event, though scaled back due to coronavirus restrictions, was cheered by the crowd as royal relatives across Europe came to witness the ceremony.

Among relatives who attended were Prince Michael of Greece and Denmark, the last living grandchild of King George I of Greece after the death of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, in April this year. He attended the event with his wife.

Queen Sofia of Spain and Princess Irene of Greece and Denmark, paternal aunts of the groom, and cousin, Infanta Elena jetted from Spain to attend the event.

The groom's maternal aunt, Princess Benedikte, and her daughter, Princess Alexandra, also attended.

The British royal family was represented by Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie, who arrived with their husband, Edo Mapelli Mozzi and Jack Brooksbank respectively.

Beatrice and Eugenie are third cousins of Prince Philippos through the Duke of Edinburgh.

Constantine II arrived in the church in a wheel-chair. He was helped by bis grandson, Prince Constantine Alexios, second in line of succession to the defunct Hellenic throne.
