Princess Estelle of Sweden Made An Official Visit To Her Duchy of Ostergotland

It feels like only yesterday that we have watched Crown Princess Victoria wed Daniel Westling, and the next thing we know, their eldest child grows up into a young lady wearing glasses and tiny heels!

Where have all the times gone? 😂 And yes, those tiny heels with hooks look so cute for a 10-year-old little princess!

On May 25, 2022, Princess Estelle of Sweden, Duchess of Ostergotland, visited her duchy, accompanied by her parents, Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden, Duchess of Vastergotland, and Prince Daniel.

The first part of their visit took place at Linkoping Castle where Princess Estelle officially unveiled her portrait (taken when she was only three years old).

It will be placed at the castle's "Duchess Estelle's Salon". Princess Estelle and her parents were also given a tour around the castle's reception hall.

Following the Linkoping Castle's activity, the royal family visited Naturum Takern and took part in the activities focusing on water and the environment. They also had the opportunity to see wild species around Takern's swamp areas.

They wrapped up their Ostergotland visit with a walk on the Fairytale trail located near Takern, a christening gift to Princess Estelle in 2012, which she visited for the first time in 2014.

Ostergotland County

It's one of the provinces in the south of Sweden. The county is largely agricultural with hills and countless lakes, and the north part is forested land.

The largest city in the province of Ostergotland is Linkoping where the 16th century Linkoping Castle stood. No members of the Swedish royal family ever lived in this castle. Currently, it is being used as a state building monument and museum.

Ostergotland has been used as a duchy title of members of the Swedish royal family. Prior to Princess Estelle, the title was held (as Duke of Ostergotland) by Prince Carl Bernadotte, only son and youngest child of Prince Carl of Sweden and Princess Ingeborg of Denmark. He was the only brother of Queen Astrid of Belgium and Crown Princess Martha of Norway.

However, Prince Carl Junior was stripped of his royal title and duchy title when he married a woman of unequal rank (despite being born a Countess) in 1937. The Duchy of Ostergotland title became dormant.

He was entered into the Belgian nobility as Count Bernadotte by his brother-in-law King Leopold III of Belgium.

Duchess of Ostergotland was bestowed by King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden to his eldest grandchild, Princess Estelle, upon birth in 2012.

Why Estelle's father is not Crown Prince Daniel?

Royal fans often asked this question. Why the husband of Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden is not titled Crown Prince? While Mette-Marit of Norway and Mary of Denmark are Crown Princesses?

The answer is: When the time comes for Crown Princess Victoria to inherit the Swedish throne, her husband would not become a king. And just like other husbands of Queen regnant in Europe, Daniel has no defined role in the constitution other than the prince consort who will support the activities and ceremonial duties of his wife. So his title is only Prince and not Crown Prince.

While Mette-Marit and Mary will eventually take the title of Queen consort when their respective husbands, Crown Prince Haakon of Norway, and Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark, ascend the throne.
