The Duchess of Brabant's very public life as heir-apparent has just begun. Now, less than three months into her 21st birthday, the princess is ready to share the load of royal duties with her parents.

First Queen regnant

When she ascends the Belgian throne someday, Princess Elisabeth would be the first Queen regnant of the country since it became an independent monarchy in 1831.

Since 1831, the Belgian throne can only be inherited by males. In 1991, the succession law of Belgium was repealed and replaced by the Absolute law of succession, giving equal rights to females. Without the change, the Duke of Brabant today is her younger brother, Prince Gabriel.

Tiara debut!

Princess Elisabeth, who didn't wear a tiara when she celebrated her 18th birthday in October 2019, had her tiara debut during the 18th birthday gala dinner of her third cousin, Princess Ingrid Alexandra of Norway .

Her tiara looked like a new head piece because it was not seen donned by any of the members of the Belgian royal family. Royal jewels experts theorized it might be a convertible tiara restyled from a diamond necklace given to the princess on her 18th birthday in 2019.
