Queen Letizia of Spain and US First Lady, Dr. Jill Biden, spent a lot of time together during the NATO Summit, held in Madrid, Spain between June 27 to June 30, 2022. They bonded for three days for a series of engagements, including a visit to Ukrainian refugees.

Dr. Jill Biden arrived in Spain on June 26, Sunday, ahead of her husband, US President Joe Biden. She was accompanied by two of the presidential granddaughters, Finnegan and Maisy Biden, daughters of Hunter Biden and his first wife, Kathleen.

President Joe Biden arrived in Spain on Tuesday, June 28, and was greeted by His Majesty, King Felipe VI. Meanwhile, their respective wives beamed in elegance wearing trendy summer ensembles.

The spotlight may have been on the NATO Summit, but the wives of the delegates have also put a stylish display of summery fashion that we love, especially Queen Letizia and Dr. Jill Biden. 

Day 1 - June 27

On Tuesday, June 27, the US First Lady made a courtesy visit, without Finnegan and Maisy, to Zarzuela Palace in Madrid and was welcomed by Queen Letizia of Spain.

The Spanish Queen Consort donned the trendiest midi dress for summer, a stylish fitting black-and-white polka dot ensemble, which she paired with a pair of Carolina Herrera black suede slingback pumps. 

While Dr. Jill Biden looked radiant in a red ensemble and a pair of cream suede pumps.  The US First Lady exuded energy in a tailored red skirt coat dress boasting gold buttons detailing and a sharp fit.

During their conversation inside the palace, the US First Lady was heard telling the Spanish Queen Consort, "I brought my two granddaughters", Dr. Biden was quoted saying according to the Associated Press, "We stayed up and, you know, had a glass of wine". 

Dr. Biden and Queen Letizia later teamed up for a series of engagements and visited local charities. After a welcome meeting in Zarzuela Palace, they visited the Spanish Association Against Cancer's headquarters. 


The First Lady tweeted a photo, "Today in Madrid, Her Majesty Queen Letizia invited me to visit @ContraCancerEs to see how the United States and Spain are working together to end cancer as we know it."

Day 2 - June 28

They met again on Tuesday, June 28, to visit the CREADE refugees center in Pozuelo de Alarcon. This time, Dr. Jill Biden brought Finnegan and Maisy to meet Queen Letizia.

For their charitable outing, Queen Letizia wore an elegant white suit from her go-to couture house, Carolina Herrera. The white suit consisted of a structured blazer and creased wide-leg trousers. She paired it with a dusty pink top by Boss.

Dr. Jill Biden, 71, was an epitome of summer in her Oscar de la Renta navy ensemble, a Jacquard Print fit dress, which boasts flattering cap sleeves and a luxe jacquard fabric.

They paid a visit to several Ukrainian refugee families, who were taken into Spain amid the tension between Ukraine and Russia. They sat down with the families to hear their stories. 

The First Lady and the Queen also met Chef Jose Andres and volunteers at his World Center Kitchen. The Chef and his charity consisting of volunteers have worked to help humanitarian efforts and are aiding in feeding refugees around Europe.

Andres took a selfie with the First Lady and Queen Letizia and some of his volunteers before he showed them around his operation.

Day 3 - June 29

But the Queen and the First Lady beamed on the third day of their joint engagement with other spouses of the NATO Summit delegates, when they "twinned" in matching espadrille wedges, known as the quintessential summer heels.

Espadrille wedges are really the best footwear to represent summer. It has the trendiest looks that can match any outfit style. May it be dress or trousers. It's hard to go on a summer trip without espadrilles in your luggage!

Queen Letizia wore espadrilles from one of her favorite shoemakers, the Macarena Shoes. While Dr. Jill Biden wore espadrilles from Alhamas, a Spanish brand.

For the day, Queen Letizia wore another polka-dot ensemble that radiates the warmth of summer, a Spanish-made sleeveless polka dot brocade dress from Laura Bernal.

While Dr. Jill Biden glowed in a summery ensemble, a white floral dress with elbow-length sleeves and a knee-length hem. The US First Lady's summer theme dress featured red, purple, and yellow flowers with green foliage throughout.

The First Spouses and the Queen visited the grand Royal Palace of Granja de San Ildefonso in Segovia on June 29 and toured the palace gardens, the royal glass factory of La Granja, the Diana Baths fountain, and the tapestry room.

The First spouses were also accompanied by Begoña Gómez, wife of Spanish Prime Minster Pedro Sánchez. The group then travelled back by train to central Madrid’s Puerta de Atocha station and crossed the road to the Reina Sofía Museum where Pablo Picasso's famous Guernica is on display.

The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Summit in Spain (June 27-30) brings together 40 world leaders to discuss pressing global issues such as the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the tensions between Moscow and the Alliance, and the accession of Finland and Sweden.

State Dinner

On Tuesday night, June 28, The King and Queen of Spain hosted a dinner for the NATO Summit delegates and their spouses at Zarzuela Palace. The royal couple welcomed the guests at the Throne Room. Then, led them to the royal reception Hall, followed by the gala dinner.

During state banquet/gala dinner, royals often wear tiaras, just like Queen Maxima in their recent state visit to Austria, however, during the NATO Summit dinner, Queen Letizia did not wear a head sparkler nor any royal regalia. Instead, she opted to wear a black floaty sleeveless dress from The 2nd Skin Co Spring Summer 2022 collection, which she accessorized with a stylish belt. She paired her outfit with a pair ofs Manolo Blahnik slingback pumps.

On Thursday, June 30, she joined the first spouses for a visit to the Royal Theatre in Madrid, on the last day of the summit. She opted to wear a more feminine look in a bespoke fuchsia dress by Carolina Herrera.

The dress featured a sleeveless silhouette, sweet button-down detailing, elegant darting, and a fit and flare midi skirt cut. She teamed the striking frock with a pair of nude slingback leather pumps, also from Carolina Herrera.

Queen Letizia, who always stepped out in style, donned her most natural summer looks during the NATO Summit, wearing cool ensembles that highlighted her taste in fashion and radiated the warmth of summer.
