In a resurfaced video clip of the BBC documentary Prince Philip: The Royal Family Remembers, Princess Eugenie revealed that her grandfather was able to meet her newborn son, August Philip Hawke Brooksbank, in Windsor Castle, shortly before he passed away.
"I brought little August to come and meet him and told him that we'd named him after him and it was such a lovely moment", the princess said as she fought back her tears. "We were very lucky to do that", she added.
Princess Eugenie gave birth to her eldest child with Jack Brooksbank on February 9, 2021, just days before Prince Philip was confined in the hospital near Windsor.Â
The Duke of Edinburgh stayed for 28 days in the hospital before he was discharged and returned to Windsor Castle. He died two weeks later.
In the documentary, Princess Eugenie held back tears while discussing the pivotal role of the Duke of Edinburgh in her life and why she decided to name her son after him.Â
She said:Â "We named August, August Philip because grandpa had been such a huge, inspiring character in my life".

But on April 9, 2021, when the Duke died peacefully at Windsor Castle, many believed he did not meet his two grandsons, both named after him, August Philip Hawke, and Lucas Philip, son of Zara Tindall, who was born on March 21, 2021.
With Princess Eugenie's revelation that Prince Philip indeed met her son before he passed away, only three among the 12 great-grandchildren were not able to see Prince Philip.Â
Lucas Philip Tindall, Lilibet Diana Mountbatten-Windsor, the daughter of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, who was born on June 4, 2021, in California, and Sienna Elizabeth Mapelli-Mozzi, daughter of Princess Beatrice and Edoardo Mapelli-Mozzi, born on September 18, 2021.
