Queen Wilhelmina was the longest-reigning Dutch monarch in history. She ascended to the Dutch throne in 1890 when she was only 10 years old upon her father's death, King William III, the last King of The Netherlands before King Wilhelm-Alexander.

Due to her minor age, the regent handled the throne until Queen Wilhelmina turned 18 in 1898. The Queen was the only child of King William III and his German second wife, Princess Emma Waldeck-Pyrmont, sister of Princess Helena, who was the daughter-in-law of Queen Victoria of Britain, and maternal great-grandmother of King Carl XVI Gustaf, making the reigning Swedish king a third cousin of the former Queen Beatrix.

Since Queen Wilhelmina, Dutch monarchs began practicing the strange royal tradition of abdicating the throne upon reaching more than 30 years on the throne. So it will be most likely that King Willem-Alexander follow this tradition, 20 years from now!

By that time, his eldest daughter and heir-apparent. Princess Catharina-Amalia is 43 and very much ready to take over the duties and responsibilities of a monarch.
