Prince Nikolaos and Princess Tatiana Announce Separation After 13 Years of Marriage

All these years, royal fans thought the marriage of Prince Nikolaos of Greece and Denmark and Princess Tatiana was one of the most stable royal marriages, they seemed to be the coolest and most loving couple, shared a happy and quiet life in mystical Greece, put up a restaurant together, and had the best moments.

They both attended numerous royal events, particularly the royal weddings of the Swedish siblings, Crown Princess Victoria, Prince Carl Philip, and Princess Madeleine, who are second cousins of Prince Nikolaos. 

But on April 19, 2024, the former Greek royal family shocked the royal world when it was announced Prince Nikolaos and Princess Tatiana would be separating after nearly 14 years of marriage!

In a statement, the private office of the former Greek royal family, announced: “We wish to inform you of a significant and heartfelt decision made by Their Royal Highnesses Prince Nikolaos and Princess Tatiana. After fourteen years of marriage, they have chosen to amicably dissolve their union. This decision was reached with great care and mutual respect, reflecting the depth of their appreciation for one another and the moments they have shared".

“Their future interactions will continue to be guided by these same principles of respect and understanding, as they transition into a relationship rooted in a strong friendship. They will continue to live and build their lives in Greece, a place they both call home. The Family will always support them. We warmly thank you for your understanding and for respecting their privacy during this time.”

The separation is the first in the Greek branch of the royal House of Glucksburg since King George II of Greece and Queen Elisabeth (born Princess of Romania) got divorced in the 1930s.

Prince Nikolaos is the third child of the former King Constantine II and Queen Anne-Marie of Greece. He was born in Rome, Italy in 1969, where their family was living in exile after a military coup in 1967. He grew up in London. In 1973, the Greek monarchy was abolished and Greece declared a republic.

But Prince Nikolaos went back to live in Greece following his wedding to Tatiana on August 25, 2010. Together, they set up a restaurant. Three years later, in 2013, they were joined by his parents, Constantine II and Anne-Marie, who decided to move to Greece from London for good. 

Although Prince Nikolaos and Princess Tatiana don't have children, they are the picture of a happy couple without any hint of a troubled union. In 2021, to mark their 11th wedding anniversary, Prince Nikolaos posted a wedding photo and said, "Happy anniversary", tagging Princess Tatiana, "11 years of happiness, looking forward to the next 111 years".

Prince Nikolaos is the only child of King Constantine and Queen Anne-Marie to live in Greece, his other three siblings - Crown Prince Pavlos, Princess Theodora, and Prince Philippos with their respective families, resided in the United States, while his older sister Princess Alexia, is living with her husband and children in the Canary Islands, a Spanish autonomous community in Macaronesia, Atlantic Ocean.

The last time Prince Nikolaos and Princess Tatiana were seen together was on February 27, 2024, in the United Kingdom when they both attended the memorial service for his father at St. George's Chapel in Windsor.

Weeks before the separation was announced, Princess Tatiana posted a cryptic message on her instagram which seems to indicate something is wrong with her private life, she said:

"Being open about having anxiety last week was the best solution to it, with it came awareness and an understanding of what triggers it. And for me, that's having too much on my plate and feeling out of control. The one thing I did, is take control of what I can control", she ended her long message with, "Sometimes we need to take a step back, to move forward".

About Princess Tatiana

She was born Tatiana Blatnik on August 27, 1980, in Caracas, Venezuela. Her mother, Marie Blanche Bierlein is the daughter of Ernst Bierlein and German aristocrat, Countess Ellinka Karin Harriet von Einsiedel, who was a descendant of King George II of the United Kingdom.

She obtained a degree in Sociology from Georgetown University in the United States. Before the announcement of her engagement to Prince Nikolaos of Greece and Denmark on December 28, 2009, Tatiana worked as an event planner for the fashion label, Diane von Fürstenberg. They were married on August 25, 2010, in the Orthodox Church of St. Nicholas on the beautiful Greek island of Spetses. 

Since living in Greece, Princess Tatiana has dedicated her career to creating partnerships for social impact, launching heritage-based projects, and a holistic approach to healthy living, she combines the spirit of philanthropy with socially responsible business initiatives. She regularly posted updates about their initiatives and activities through her website, Tatiana Blatnik.

In March 2021, Princess Tatiana launched “BREATHE,” a Mindful Mental Health Movement, dedicated to raising awareness around mental health and building healthier, more compassionate communities. She is the co-author of A Taste of Greece, an entrepreneurial project to support and promote the country and its cuisine.

She currently serves as the International Ambassador of The Hellenic Initiative – a global movement of the Greek Diaspora to develop sustainable business improvement programs in Greece. Most recently, she worked with Lemon Tree Trust, where she launched agricultural businesses in refugee communities in Northern Iraq, Greece, and Jordan. 

With this official announcement of separation, Prince Nikolaos and Princess Tatiana became the latest royal couple to sever their marital union, and the first among the children of the late Constantine II. Wishing them well and happiness.
