We haven't seen the teenage daughters of King Felipe VI of Spain and Queen Letizia gracing public events in a month, but on June 25 they were spotted accompanying their parents to a flamenco show in Madrid!

Leonor, Princess of Asturias and Infanta Sofia accompanied their parents, King Felipe VI of Spain and Queen Letizia to a Flamenco show, De Sheherazade, directed by María Pagés and El Arbi El Harti at the Sala Roja de Teatros del Canal in Madrid, Spain.

María Pagés, a dancer and choreographer, is the recent winner of the Princess of Asturias Award for the Arts. Together with Flamenco singer, Carmen Linares, they presented a new show, De Sheherazade, at the Sala Roja de Teatros del Canal in Madrid.

According to Barcelona Metropolitan, De Sheherazade has been hailed all over the world as one of the finest contemporary flamenco shows. It is a new take on the gypsy cigarette girl from Mérimée's novella which was made famous by Bizet and the storyteller of the Arabian Nights.

María Pagés reinterprets these two central characters as women who advance undaunted, proud of their sexual identity, women free of conventions and hackneyed folklore.

To go with the theme of the show, the teen princesses, who obviously got their chic fashion sense from their stylish mother, Queen Letizia, stepped out in their own version of a hippie fashion with a fresh youthful vibe.

Princesses in Style

The Princess of Asturias and her younger sister, the Infanta Sofia, wowed the crowd with their fabulous summer outfit, donning ensembles that characterized them as stylish grown-ups. But in a contrasting fashion statement.

While Princess Leonor chose the reserved-girly type, below-the-knee Midi shirt dress from Dandara (a Spanish fashion brand), Infanta Sofia opted for the sexier cut, a floral mini dress from Zara, topped with a denim jacket.

Queen Letizia, who always dressed up to the nines during public events, this time, opted for a low-key outfit - white pants, black sleeveless, and a pair of ballet flats - to allow to her daughters to shine.

As they grew up into young ladies and made sense of their environment, Princess Leonor and Infanta Sofia became more confident with their fashion styles.

Leonor and Sofia show their unique taste in fashion

However, in great contrast to their childhood days where they often wore identical dresses, today they began to develop their individuality.

The Princess of Asturias favors the more girly cut and conventional style, while Infanta Sofia likes to experiment with mix-and-match fashion, and is more adventurous with her ensemble choices.

It's refreshing to see the contrasting fashion taste of these two Spanish princesses. They have finally developed their own personality and sense of style, and have outgrown the "twinning" moment they used to have when they were still kids.

Why Leonor is a princess and Sofia an infanta?

Some royal fans are wondering what's going on with Spanish royal titles, and why they have unique titles than in other parts of Europe.

Technically, Sofia has the dignity and style of a princess similar to princesses in other monarchies in Europe because she is styled HRH. However, as a courtesy title, she is known as Infanta because she is not the Princess of Asturias.

King Felipe VI has no sons, thus, his eldest daughter, by virtue of male-preference primogeniture law, is his heir-presumptive (a conditional heir because Spain has not yet changed its succession law to Absolute primogeniture).

Based on the 1978 Spanish Constitution, the heir-apparent and heir-presumptive of the Spanish monarch should be granted the title Prince or Princess of Asturias.

Other than the heir-apparent or the heir-presumptive, daughters and sons of the Spanish Sovereign and the Prince/Princess of Asturias, who are not in direct succession to the throne, should take the title Infanta for females and Infante for males with the courtesy style of HRH.

Sofia is not in direct succession to the Spanish throne so her title is Infanta. Although she is the "spare" while her sister is still single and has no children, she will be pushed down the line of succession once Leonor will have legitimate children.

In the current Spanish royalty, no persons bear the title "Infante" because King Juan Carlos I of Spain has no sons other than Felipe VI. The last Spanish Infante was Carlos, Duke of Calabria, who died in 2015. He was the great-grandson of King Alfonso XII.

There are currently four Infantas in the Spanish royal family:
  1. Infanta Sofia - the younger daughter of King Felipe VI
  2. Infanta Elena, Duchess of Lugo - elder daughter of King Juan Carlos
  3. Infanta Cristina (she was stripped of her title, Duchess of Palma de Mallorca in 2015, by her brother, King Felipe VI, due to the corruption scandal she got involved in) - younger daughter of King Juan Carlos
  4. Infanta Margartia, Duchess of Soria and Hernani - younger sister of King Juan Carlos
