Princess Catharina-Amalia, Princess of Orange

Their Majesties King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima of The Netherlands revealed in a press conference in Sweden during their state visit that their eldest daughter, Princess Catharina-Amalia, the Princess of Orange, left her student apartment near the University of Amsterdam due to security threats.

The heir to the throne, who turned 18 in December 2021, moved back to the Family's residence in Huis ten Bosch Palace in The Hague after intelligence reports surmised last month that the Crown Princess could become the target of criminal gangs and kidnapping.

The Princess of Orange is currently in her freshman year at the University of Amsterdam taking up a degree in politics and economics. She was pictured smiling and waving to photographers and the crowd upon arrival at the school campus on her first day of classes. It was also revealed that she will live in a student apartment near the university.

Weeks later, she was pulled out of her apartment due to security threats and has since returned to the palace in The Hague and would leave only when going to school. Queen Maxima also clarified that her daughter is still attending classes and would just travel from The Hague to Amsterdam and vice versa while still fixing arrangements with her security.

"It's very tough", said King Willem-Alexander during the press conference in Sweden, describing his feeling as a father hearing reports of security threats to his daughter. "She's not out of the house", Queen Maxima added, "It has huge consequences (the security threats) for her life, she can't really go outside".

"No student life for her like other students have. I am very proud of her how she keeps it all going", Queen Maxima said. "It makes me a bit emotional, It's not nice to see your child live like that". Their Majesties clarified however that their daughter is still attending classes.

No details have been given about the nature of the threats. Last month after the Princess of Orange arrived at the university, it was reported that her security details were tightened due to fears of a kidnapping attack from criminal gangs.

Dutch Prime Minister, Mark Rutte, expressed his concern about the security threats reports and was very much worried about the situation, according to Dutch public television. But the justice and security minister of The Netherlands assured the public, "that our security services are working day and night to ensure her security".

Princess Catharina-Amalia took a gap year after graduating from high school last year. In April this year, the Dutch Royal House stated that the heir apparent to the Dutch throne will take up classes in politics, psychology, law, and economics at the University of Amsterdam beginning this academic year.

The Princess of Orange finished high school at the Christelijk Gymnasium Sorghvliet in The Hague. Her younger sister, Princess Alexia, is currently in Wales finishing her secondary school at the University of the World College of the Atlantic where she is a classmate of the future Queen of Spain, Leonor, Princess of Asturias. While their youngest sister, Princess Arianne, 15, is in high school at the Christelijk Gymnasium Sorghvliet.

When she turned 18 last year, Princess Catharina-Amalia became eligible to receive allowances from the government but she wrote to the prime minister declining the offer to receive €1.6m (£1.4m) a year, saying that she will only take it once she starts performing formal royal duties as Princess of Orange.
