Queen Maxima Glitters in Ruby Parure Tiara at the State Banquet in Greece

Queen Maxima and King Willem-Alexander visit Greece

Their Majesties King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima of The Netherlands are in Greece for their official state visit. They arrived in Athens on October 31, 2022. And the Queen has once again packed a suitcase of glamorous ensembles for the occasion.

One of the most splendid items she brought to Greece is this magnificent Mellerio Ruby Parure Tiara, which she wore during the state banquet hosted by the President of Greece, Katerina Sakellaropoulou.

Queen Maxima wore several stunning outfits during their Greek state visit, including the Lissie silk velvet gown from the Costarellos fashion brand, a cape dress in blush pink from Claes Iversen, and gorgeous pumps from Gianvito Rossi.

However, it was the Ruby Parure Tiara that she wore during the state dinner that impressed us. And looked how she wore the brooch! Actually, this piece in the parure is also called "stomacher" and is usually pinned in the stomach area of the dress. But other Dutch royals often wore it as a normal brooch.

This tiara is one of the most splendid items in the Dutch royal jewelry collection and has been in the Dutch royal family since 1888.

Origin of the Dutch Ruby Parure Tiara

In 1888, King William III of the Netherlands (1817-1890), commissioned a French jeweler, Mellerio dits Meller, to create a magnificent tiara for his wife, Queen Emma (1858-1934), born Princess Emma of Waldeck-Pyrmont.

Mellerio designed a stunning piece in a classic shape with large scroll motifs in rubies and diamonds. It also has two smaller motifs at the side. This tiara comes with a brooch/stomacher, necklace, earrings, bracelet, and a ruby-encrusted fan.  Thus the term, parure.

Except for Queen Juliana, the tiara is rarely worn in a complete set by the succeeding wearers, Queen Beatrix and Queen Maxima. After the death of Queen Juliana, some items in the parure set are lent to other Dutch princesses such as Princess Margriet and Princess Christina (siblings of the former Queen Beatrix). However, the tiara seems exclusively worn only by the Queens.
