Christmas always brings joy to families because it is a time for family reunions and get together, however, for the Danish royal family who had a tumultuous autumn season, it seems there's no family reunion on Christmas eve as they chose to spend Christmas season far away from each other.

Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark brought his family to Australia, the homeland of his wife, Crown Princess Mary.

Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary were spotted with their children on Monday, December 19, in Bondi, a suburban area in Sydney, having lunch. They later mingled with the crowd and enjoyed local shopping.

They were accompanied by Amber Petty, a good friend of Crown Princess Mary, and who stood as one of her bride's maids during her wedding to Crown Prince Frederik in 2004. They were later seen walking along the beach with shopping bags in their hands.

The visit of the Danish royals in Australia is a private family holiday. In November this year, the Danish Royal Palace confirmed that the Crown Prince's family would be returning to Australia by December.

It is believed they will spend Christmas with Crown Princess Mary's family - the Donaldsons - in Tasmania, an island state in Australia, where the Crown Princess was born and raised.

A statement from the Danish Royal Palace in November said, “In December, the Crown Prince’s family will travel on a private Christmas holiday in Australia to celebrate the holiday with HRH the Crown Princess’s family,”

“It has been five years since the Crown Prince couple, together with their four children, last visited the Crown Princess’s homeland.”

Meanwhile, Crown Prince Frederik's younger brother, Prince Joachim, will stay in Paris, with his wife, Princess Marie, and their children for the Holiday season.

According to royal insiders, Queen Margrethe II will spend her Christmas eve with her younger sister, Princess Benedikte, and some friends at the Danish royal family's home in Marselisborg Palace in Aarhus, Denmark.

Queen Margrethe II announced in September this year that she decided to remove the Prince and Princess titles from her grandchildren with Prince Joachim to streamline the Danish monarchy.

The Queen, 82, who celebrated her Golden Jubilee on the throne of Denmark this year, insisted the move will be "good for them in their future" to allow her four grandchildren - Prince Nikolai, Prince Felix, Prince Henrik, and Princess Athena to "shape their own lives without being limited by the special considerations and duties" that a formal affiliation with the Danish Royal Family involves.

The new direction of the Danish Royal House as outlined by Queen Margrethe only guarantees Prince Christian, 17, the eldest son of Crown Prince Frederik, to receive allowances from the state. He is believed to start taking official royal duties next year as he turns 18.

Meanwhile, the Danish Royal House shared a photo of Princess Athena, the only daughter of Prince Joachim, making her Gingerbread House at their home in Paris, France.

"Only imagination sets limits when Her Highness Princess Athena builds her gingerbread house", the Danish Royal House's instagram account said in the caption.

Effective January 2023, Princess Athena would be known henceforth as Her Excellency Countess Athena de Monpezat.
