New Portraits To Mark the 85th Birthday of Former Dutch Queen Beatrix

The Dutch Royal House has just unveiled new photos of the former Queen Beatrix with her eldest son, King Willem-Alexander, and her granddaughter, Princess Catharina-Amalia, the Princess of Orange. 

The photos marked the 85th birthday of the former Dutch monarch today, January 31, 2023. Happy birthday Your Royal Highness!

The former Queen ascended the Dutch throne on April 30, 1980, upon the abdication of her mother, Queen Juliana. Thirty three years later on April 30, 2013, she also abdicated the throne in favor of her eldest son, now King Willem-Alexander.

Unlike other monarchs who retained their style after abdication, the Queen reverted to her old style as Her Royal Highness Princess Beatrix of Orange-Nassau. 

Princess Beatrix led a relatively quiet life after her voluntary abdication and stayed out of the royal life, but she occasionally conducted her own public engagement.

She would also attend royal events overseas with her son and daughter-in-law, Queen Maxima. She attended the memorial service of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh in Westminster Abbey, London, in March 2022, and the State Funeral of Queen Elizabeth II in September 2022.

Meanwhile, King Willem-Alexander, Queen Maxima, and Princess Catharina-Amalia are in the Caribbean for their official overseas tour. On the second leg of their tour in Aruba, they visited the Arikok National Park.
