But the most striking element in her appearance was the set of jewelry she wore for the occasion. It has a symbolic connection to the British royal family.

The turquoise and diamond brooch and matching drop-earrings were given by her mother-in-law, Queen Margrethe II, to her last year on the occasion of her 50th birthday in February.

These turquoise and diamond jewels were inherited by the Queen from her mother, Queen Ingrid, who was born Princess of Sweden.

The heirlooms were wedding gifts to Queen Ingrid's mother, Crown Princess Margareta of Sweden, who was born Princess Margaret of Connaught, the granddaughter of Queen Victoria, from the princess's mother, Princess Louise Margaret of Prussia.

However, these jewelry pieces had a splendid origin that can be traced back to the opulent Russian imperial court of Catherine the Great.

It passed through many generations and kingdoms and finally ended in the royal jewelry vault of the Danish royal family through Queen Ingrid.

From the imperial court of Russia, these pieces of jewelry traveled to Germany, possibly as wedding gifts, to Empress Catherine's granddaughter, Grand duchess Maria Pavlovna, (third daughter of Emperor Paul I of Russia), on her wedding to Charles Frederick, Grand Duke of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach (German state).

In return, the pieces were inherited by their grandson, Prince Karl Friedrich of Prussia whose daughter, Princess Louise Margaret married the third son of Queen Victoria, Prince Arthur, Duke of Connaught, in 1879. Princess Louise Margaret then gifted the pieces to her eldest daughter, Princess Margaret, on the occasion of her wedding to the future Swedish king, Gustaf Adolf, in 1905.

These turquoise and diamond pieces were so classic in appearance and can be worn in many ways by detaching the buttons from the base.

Crown Princess Mary wore the earrings at the King's coronation by detaching the row of small diamonds and re-styling it like dropped earrings.

She also detached the brooch from the hanging set and re-attached the teardrop pendant to the oval-shaped button to achieve a simple but classic look.

Re-styling, mixing, and matching her outfits and jewelry have been Crown Princess Mary's personality in fashion to recreate a fresh look out of the old pieces.
