Their Majesties King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia attended the the Opening of the long-awaited Royal Collections Gallery in Madrid on July 25, 2023.
The eight-story building, which was first constructed during the reign of King Juan Carlos, is located on the hillside next to the Royal Palace in Madrid.

This museum offers a journey through the history of the Spanish Monarchy and the artistic taste of each of its important figures, from the first reigns of the Middle Ages up to King Juan Carlos I.

Inaugurated on 29 June 2023, the museum has become National Heritage’s key tool for projecting its cultural activity, as well as functioning as a stage for the enormous wealth and diversity of the Royal Collections related to this body.

It's also the backbone of any visit to the Royal Palace complex, where it can be accessed from Plaza de la Armería and from the Campo de Moro Park and Madrid Río Park gardens.

The new museum, costing €172 million ($186.8 million), has 650 works spanning five centuries on show, including masterpieces by Velazquez, Caravaggio, Goya and a first edition of Cervantes’ “Don Quixote.”

It houses a selection of the 170,000 paintings, sculptures, tapestries and decorative arts. Some works on display at the new museum have never seen before by the public.
One is “Saint Michael the Archangel Defeating the Devil,” a wooden sculpture completed in 1692 by Luisa Roldan, the first woman appointed as a Spanish court sculptor.

For the event, Queen Letizia wore a sleeveless A-line dress with a bow from Carolina Herrera and a pair of black slingback pumps also from Carolina Herrera.
