King Charles is the first British king who is also a Glucksburg monarch, just like Queen Margrethe II of Denmark, and King Harald V of Norway. His father, Prince Philip, was the great-grandson in the male line of King Christian IX of Denmark, from the royal House of Glucksburg.

Prince Philip, however, gave up his place in the line of succession to the Greek throne and his Greek royal titles, in February 1947 to become a British citizen for his upcoming marriage to the future Queen Elizabeth II. Prince Philip adopted his maternal grandfather's surname of Mountbatten (the Anglicized version of Battenberg).
