Appointment of Prince Guillaume as Grand Duke Henri of Luxembourg's Regent Will Be on October 8

Prince Guillaume of Luxembourg regent

On June 23, 2024, during the National Day in Luxembourg, which also celebrated the official birthday of Grand Duke Henri, the Grand Duke surprised the public that he would step back from public duties and most of his constitutional responsibilities would be taken over by his eldest son and heir, Hereditary Grand Duke Guillaume.

The announcement marked the transition of Luxembourg into the regency period, which had been the practice in the grand duchy since the 1960s. However, Grand Duke Henri remains the country's head of state.

They are now in the same situation as the Principality of Liechtenstein where the day-to-day running of the principality has been taken over by Hereditary Prince Alois since August 2004. His father, Prince Hans-Adam II, remains the Sovereign Prince.

Days ago, the Grand Ducal House of Luxembourg announced that the appointment of Hereditary Grand Duke Guillaume as Lieutenant Representative of his father will take place on the 8th of October this year, just a day after the Grand Duke celebrates his 24th anniversary on the Luxembourgian throne.

The signing of appointment will take place at the Grand Ducal Palace followed by the swearing-in ceremony in front of the House of Deputies.

Luxembourg has a history of abdication, just like The Netherlands. Grand Duke Henri became heir apparent to the Luxembourgian throne on the abdication of his paternal grandmother, Grand Duchess Charlotte of Luxembourg, on November 12, 1964.

On March 4, 1998, Henri was appointed lieutenant representative by his father, Grand Duke Jean, assuming most of his father's constitutional powers.

On October 7, 2000, following the abdication of his father, Henri acceded as Grand Duke of Luxembourg, but by then, Grand Duke Jean was already reigning for nearly 36 years. Next year, Grand Duke Henri will celebrate his silver anniversary as Luxembourg's grand duke.
