Royalworldnews Luxembourg1

His Royal Highness Grand Duke Henri officially stepped back from public duties on October 8, 2024. He handed over his day-to-day public activities to his eldest son and heir, HRH Prince Guillaume, the Hereditary Grand Duke of Luxembourg.

Apart from Grand Duke Henri, Prince Guillaume's swearing-in ceremony in front of government deputies has been witnessed by his wife, Hereditary Grand Duchess Stephanie, and his mother, Grand Duchess Maria Teresa.

Formally known as Regency, this new era in Luxembourg where Prince Guillaume will take over the role of his father as Lieutenant-Representative, has not happened since March 1998 when Grand Duke Henri also became the Lieutenant-Representative of his father, Grand Duke Jean, before the latter abdicated on October 7, 2000.

Grand Duke Henri, however, remained Luxembourg's head of state and will continue to do so until the time he decides to abdicate. This transition of roles is in preparation for the Grand Duke's eventual abdication in the future, allowing his son to be exposed to what real job awaits him in the future.

Prince Guillaume's first speech as Lieutenant-Representative:

"I swear to observe the Constitution and the laws and to faithfully fulfill my constitutional attributions...I am aware that today also for me personally, for my wife and our children, a new stage in our lives begins, and we look to the future with confidence. I look forward to being at the side of the Grand Duke, as lieutenant representative, at the service of the country and its inhabitants and doing the best for Luxembourg."

Sending our best wishes for Hereditary Grand Duke Guillaume and Hereditary Grand Duchess Stephanie for this new milestone as they begin a new Regency era in Luxembourg.
