Princess Theodora of Greece and Matthew Kumar Weds in Athens, Congratulations!

Finally, after several postponements, the wedding of Princess Theodora of Greece and Denmark and her American lawyer fiance, Matthew Kumar, was pushed through on September 28, 2024, at the Metropolitan Cathedral in Athens, Greece.

The wedding took place 60 years after her parents, Queen Anne-Marie and the late King Constantine II of Greece wed in the same church in the same month. Princess Theodora is the only one among her siblings whose wedding was not witnessed by her father who died in January 2023.

Princess Theodora walked in the arms of her older brother, Crown Prince Pavlos of Greece. Unlike her siblings whose respective weddings were attended by members of European royalty who are mostly their relatives, her wedding was only attended by her family and cousins. Even her two first cousins kings, Felipe VI of Spain and Frederik X of Denmark, and uncle King emeritus Juan Carlos of Spain, were not in attendance.

It looks like Princess Theodora and Matthew Kumar chose to make their wedding a low-key event, still it drew a large crowd in Athens, who came to witness the last royal wedding in their country from the first generation of their last King.

Royal family members who attended the wedding, apart from Princess Theodora's direct family, were her paternal aunts - Queen emerita Sofia of Spain and Princess Irene, her maternal aunt, Princess Benedikte of Denmark - her cousins Infanta Elena of Spain, Infanta Cristina of Spain and their children, Prince Gustav of Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg and his wife, Princess Carina.

Sons and daughters-in-law of Prince Ernst Augustus of Hanover (first cousin of King Constantine II) -  Prince Ernst Augustus and Princess Ekaterina, Prince Christian and Princess Alessandra. None of the British and Swedish royal relatives of Princess Theodora came to the wedding, perhaps no invites were sent as having more royal members attending the wedding means added security costs.

Princess Theodora wore a beautiful wedding dress from Greek designer, Celia Kritharioti, who also designed the silk white dress she wore at the pre-wedding reception. Princess Theodora wore the veil and Khedive Tiara originally owned by her great-grandmother, Crown Princess Margarita of Sweden (born Princess Margaret of Connaught).

The Khedive Tiara was inherited by her grandmother, Queen Ingrid, and all of Queen Ingrid's daughters and granddaughters wore it on their wedding days. The veil was also worn by Queen Ingrid's daughters at their wedding. Queen Mary of Denmark also wore it at her wedding to King Frederik X in 2004.

Sending our best wishes and congratulations to Matthew Kumar and Princess Theodora! May their union will last a lifetime. They have been engaged since 2018 and planned to marry in 2020, but the wedding was postponed due to the pandemic. On January 10, 2023, King Constantine II passed away, forcing another postponement.
