Royals Attend the 80th Anniversary of the Liberation of Auschwitz in Poland

Royals and other heads of state gathered in Poland on January 27, 2025, to mark the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp, which is observed globally as Holocaust Memorial Day. Auschwitz-Birkenau was the location of the Nazi's largest concentration camp during World War II where millions of Jews were murdered.

Royals who attended the event: King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima of The Netherlands with their daughter, Princess Catharina-Amalia, the Princess of Orange, King Philippe and Queen Mathilde of Belgium, King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia of Spain, King Charles III who came without Queen Camilla, King Frederik X and Queen Mary of Denmark, Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden, Crown Prince Haakon of Norway, and Hereditary Grand Duke Guillaume and Hereditary Grand Duchess Stephanie of Luxembourg.

The concentration camp's survivors were the focus of the ceremony. No politicians or dignitaries spoke during the event, only survivors who described Auschwitz as a hell on Earth — a place where life lost all meaning. Their harrowing testimonies at the memorial service on Monday were to reveal the depths of the cruelty inflicted on so many people, but also the resilience of the human spirit.

Among those who traveled to the site was 86-year-old Tova Friedman, who was 6 when she was among the 7,000 people liberated on Jan. 27, 1945. She believes it will the be last gathering of survivors at Auschwitz.
