The second-in-line in direct succession to the Danish throne, Prince Christian of Denmark, will turn 18 on October 15, 2023, and preparations for a large-scale birthday bash for the prince are underway!

Prince Christian is the eldest child of Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary of Denmark, and the third eldest grandson of Her Majesty, Queen Margrethe II following Count Nikolai of Monpezat and Count Felix of Monpezat (formerly princes of Denmark).

According to Danish digital media, SE, "selected teenagers from all over the country (Denmark), have been invited to celebrate the prince's big day". But emphasized that they should not bring gifts to the prince.

"Gifts are refused", according to Faaborg-Midtfyn municipality's website. "Participants must not bring a gift to the prince". Guests are also not allowed to take photos during the party.

The Danish Royal Family's official website also published the events on Prince Christian's birthday:

"On Prince Christian's birthday, the Royal Life Guard will be in red gala uniforms, and at 11.50 the Life Guard will carry out a large changing of the guard in front of Christian VII's Palace at Amalienborg.

In this connection, the Prince appears together with his family and the Queen on the balcony of Frederik VIII's Palace at 12.00.

In the evening, The Queen will host a gala dinner at Christiansborg Castle at 17:00 where the guests reflect Prince Christian's own generation.

Among other things, representatives from a selection of the country's youth organizations as well as young people who have distinguished themselves in the world of sport, art, and culture are invited. 

In addition, up to 200 young people from the Commonwealth are invited to participate in the celebration, as each of Denmark's municipalities as well as Greenland and the Faroe Islands has had the opportunity to select two 18-year-olds to participate in the gala".

As he will officially become an adult, Prince Christian is expected to start taking royal duties. On November 14, he will attend a meeting of the Council of State and declare that he wishes to comply with the Danish constitution".

“Prince Christian will then be able to be appointed as head of state but will not get a seat in the Council of State yet until a change of throne has taken place".

Expected Royal Guests

Who are the royals expected to attend the gala dinner for the prince's 18th birthday? The Danish Royal House has not yet shared the names of invited guests but it is highly anticipated that Prince Christian's royal godparents will be attending.

He was christened on January 21, 2006, and his royal godparents include his paternal uncle, Prince Joachim of Denmark, Crown Prince Haakon of Norway, Crown Prince Pavlos of Greece, Crown Princess Mette-Marit of Norway, and Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden.

It is unlikely that Prince Joachim, his wife, and children can attend the celebration as they are now currently based in Washington, USA. Prince Joachim's eldest child, Count Nikolai, is currently studying in Sydney, Australia.

However, since this is a formal gala reception, guests are expected to come in their formal outfits. Ball gowns for women and the royal women will wear their tiaras.

The gala dinner will be held in Christiansborg Palace, which is located in Slotsholmen, Copenhagen. The palace is used by Queen Margrethe II for official events such as gala banquets and public audiences.
