Prince Michael, the last surviving grandson of King George I of Greece, Dies at 85

A very sad news just in: His Royal Highness Prince Michael of Greece and Denmark died today, July 28, 2024, in Greece.

He was the last surviving grandson of King George I of Greece and the last surviving great grandson of King Christian IX of Denmark. Prince Michael was the first cousin of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh who died in April 2021.

Prince Michael of Greece and Denmark was born on January 7 1939 in Rome, Italy, as the only child of Prince Christopher of Greece and Denmark and his second wife Princess Françoise d'Orléans of France.

He was a historian and author who wrote several historical books and biographies of Greek and other European figures, in addition to working as a contributing writer to Architectural Digest.

In 1965, he renounced his place in the line of succession to the Greek throne when he married a commoner, Greek artist Marina Karella. They have two children together, Princess Olga of Savoy-Aosta, and Princess Alexandra of Greece.

Our deepest condolences to the family of Prince Michael. May His Royal Highness truly rest in peace 😌
